This stack combines all 7 modules in the ELL Series; they do not have to be completed in sequential order. 

Objectives

In these modules, you will...

  • Module 1
    • Practice key steps in advocating for ELLs.
    • Develop an advocacy action plan to determine professional goals for advocating for ELLs in their schools.

  • Module 2

    • Identify the purpose and challenges of assessing ELL students. 

    • Understand and evaluate valid and reliable assessments and data sets. 

    • Analyze tools for differentiated assessment and instruction. 

    • Explore summative assessments and develop formative assessments. 

  • Module 3

    • Recognize the diversity within the ELL community and demonstrate the role this has on instruction.

    • Demonstrate an understanding of the role that culture plays in forming partnerships with ELLs and their families. 

    • Demonstrate understanding of the kinds of knowledge that students bring to the classroom and how to incorporate and build on students’ strengths and cultural backgrounds during instruction. 

    • Incorporate knowledge of the role of culture in language learning into instruction. 

  • Module 4

    • Explore ways to increase family engagement.

    • Understand scaffolded advocacy, asset-based perspective, and cultural dilemmas.

    • Understand the five steps of an advocacy plan.

  • Module 5

    • Understand what second language acquisition is and how it relates to ELLs’ development of communication skills and academic achievement in English .

    • Apply knowledge of the core ideas and strategies of research-based SLA models when planning instruction for ELLs.

    • Explore the stages of SLA, and identify ELLs at different stages of SLA using examples of student work/case studies.

    • Apply appropriate instructional strategies for ELLs at varying stages of SLA.

  • Module 6

    • Learn about the potential implications for a College and Career-Ready, standards-based curriculum on ELLs’ learning and achievement.
    • Analyze the academic language demands of standards-based lessons.
    • Implement strategies to support ELL learning and achievement within a standards-based curriculum framework.
  • Module 7
    • Demonstrate awareness of the school and classroom climate necessary to support the teaching of ELLs.

    • Understand the socio-cultural considerations for creating an equitable educational environment for ELLs.

    • Identify the relevant state and federal laws and regulations pertaining to ELLs and their education, including identification of the support systems for these learners. 

    • Describe ELL cultural considerations and culturally and linguistically responsive teaching.  

    • Demonstrate an understanding of the uniqueness of different ELL populations and the considerations for their teaching and learning.
