Description
An advocacy perspective requires educators to believe that with adequate support, English language learners (ELLs) can achieve at the same level as their non-ELL peers. Advocates also believe that educators have a shared sense of responsibility for the academic achievement of ELLs. For educators to approach ELLs’ instruction from an advocacy perspective, they must understand the needs and key areas for ELL advocacy, as well as understand the tools and strategies that can support advocacy efforts.
Participants completing this course should be able to define advocacy and the need for advocacy for ELLs, be aware of key strategies in advocating for ELLs, understand the rights of ELLs and their families, and collaborate effectively with other educators, along with ELLs, their families, and communities.
