This course explores the evolution of disability representation from historical perspectives to the impact of media, examining how past practices have influenced current views and perceptions. It also offers strategies for fostering inclusivity in educational settings through anti-ableist practices, aiming to transform classrooms into more inclusive environments. Read more

Educators will develop a common language and understanding for diversity, equity, and cultural competence. This will allow them to effectively develop and implement strategies that value the cultural experiences of all students and their families. When students’ diverse cultural experiences are valued in their education, they are honored and feel a sense of belonging—something that helps them to engage with the content. Thereby, promoting social and academic success. In this course, you will need a diary to capture daily your thoughts on one of these three topics: Diversity Equity Cultural Competence Each school day, write 1-2 sentences in your diary, take a photo & include a caption, draw a picture, or use another method to share your thoughts and observations on diversity, equity, and cultural competence in your learning environment. Through a review of relevant research and resources, this course will support educators in a process of self-examination around some of the assumptions we may make about the effort our culturally and linguistically diverse students exert, then examine what energizes them to learn. Educators will be able to define and describe implicit and explicit bias and identify how bias influences decisions, actions, and behaviors with students and families. Educators will also identify specific actions they can take to disrupt bias in their classrooms, schools, and districts.
